Innovations In The Web Hosting Industry | Modern Dignity - The ...

Innovations In The Web Hosting Industry

The world of web hosting is getting many innovative trends. It is very difficult to ignore these styles if you want your online business to catch ahead. Or else your website would lose pace and get out of track. The right kind of web hosting can make a huge difference for your site. It helps you to explore your options in the best possible way. If you do have a perfect host then it would instantly hinder your business. Without proper hosting people may find it hard to locate your site over the internet. Even if they are able to find your site, it may take much time to download. So, the essence of the right web hosting service can never be ignored.

?

Some of the innovative trends coming in the field of web hosting are:

1. CMS Hosting:

Few open-source content management systems (or CMS) have achieved a huge popularity. These are the first choice of many beginners as well as expert users. The content management systems such as Joomla, Drupal and WordPress have simplified the web development through giving a cleaner interface for programming along with lots of modules plus themes which can be customized easily as per the requirements. Several web hosting companies give CMS based hosting packages for providing the webmasters a perfect platform to build a blog or website. The WordPress hosting is getting enormously popular as it provides an easy interface along with an extensive range of themes plus applications. As a result you are able to easily create an appealing and efficient site or blog.

You are able to select a content management system depending on the needs of your website. If you have eCommerce site or online store, then you need to go for magento hosting. This is a perfect hosting choice for your website. Those who set up a site for first time can surely choose CMS as this is a highly beneficial option. The CMS can impact the look of your website extensively. The CMS hosting helps to build a website that gives a smooth navigation in between the various pages. The feel and appearance of the website would definitely get better using the CMS based kind of hosting platform.

2. Green Hosting :

The companies want a way to power their data centers and web servers. Lots of money can be saved due to decrease in energy costs. Such a trend would further reduce the web hosting expenses. The use of the renewable energy proves very environmental friendly, and also leads to considerable savings. The servers that are hosted in the green data center prove much affordable and also ensure remarkable efficiency.

The use of green energy to power the data center as well as the servers is getting increasing popular. This makes the web hosting more economical as the expenses for energy needed to power the servers gets reduced. The ideal temperature is achieved as the servers tend to function efficiently for ensuring the optimum performance. The energy use is relatively lesser. The servers here get more powerful as well as less costly.

3. Virtualization:

The wide scale use of virtualization would continue at a rapid pace. The virtualization is already hugely popular in the website hosting industry. The web hosting companies look forward to develop the efficient virtualization skills.

The virtualized platforms of web hosting will result in cheaper hosting methods. The virtualization makes sure that the optimum use of resources is done along with considerable cost reduction. This is the promising aspect of this trend. The virtualized platform is more reliable, stable and powerful to accomplish the required tasks.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards.

Having escaped out of Earth's atmosphere two dozen times, Endeavour's slow-speed trek Saturday to its retirement center took it through the working class streets of southern Los Angeles.

In an instant, the shuttle crossings became part of history.

Along the 12-mile course, people marveled at the engineering. Some rooted for Endeavour when it appeared it might clip a light post. Others wondered if it could just hurry up to its destination.

Crowds gathered in front of lnglewood High School before sunrise Saturday to watch Endeavour roll by at about 2 mph. Many were bundled up sipping coffee. By late afternoon, some 30,000 people were gathered along the final stretch of the journey, according to fire department estimates.

Dean Martinez, who lives in Los Angeles but works in Inglewood, came with his wife and 9-year-old daughter.

"This is great for the city as a whole. It makes us proud," said Martinez, a project director for a nonprofit whose family took turns taking pictures of one another as the shuttle slowly inched by.

Added his wife, Marcia: "It's a big deal especially for this neighborhood. It's important to witness history and for our children to experience it."

Endeavour was scheduled to inch into the California Science Center late Saturday to spend the rest of its years as a museum piece.

Unlike other high-profile events like the Academy Awards or the Rose Parade, the procession was centered in some of the area's most economically downtrodden and troubled places. The shuttle passed several gritty areas and shuttered businesses, and rolled down many streets that were aflame two decades earlier during the 1992 riots brought on by the Rodney King beating.

"Having a shuttle come through this area of high poverty, it can only be a good thing" for the community," said Damian Pipkins, a volunteer at Eso Won Books.

But it was also a day of hurdles and hiccups that by late afternoon had Endeavour running some two hours behind. There was no major single reason for the slowdown ? it was the accumulation of many small problems involving maneuvering and maintenance.

They included a small tree that planners hadn't thought needed removal but ended up bringing the procession to a stop. As crews tried to find ways to tilt and twist the shuttle past the tree, they came close to deciding to cut it down before it squeezed through.

Another slip-up came when it appeared the shuttle was going to hit a light post, and crews again began plans to remove it as the ship slid through.

The crowd had its problems too. Despite temperatures in the mid-70s, some 26 people were treated for heat-related injuries after a long day in the sun, a fire department statement said.

But incredibly, given the size of the crowd, police reported no arrests.

The shuttle made a late-morning pit stop at the Forum, where it was greeted in the arena's parking lot by a throng of cheering spectators. After crawling up Crenshaw Boulevard, the shuttle was scheduled to stop for a bit at the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A celebration was planned, including speeches by politicians and a dance performance choreographed by Debbie Allen.

Endeavour hit the pavement before dawn Friday, trundling out of the Los Angeles International Airport on a remote-controlled 160-wheel carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs.

The pace picked up Friday night when the five-story-tall shuttle was towed over a freeway overpass by a truck (The mated shuttle and carrier were too heavy for that section.) Next to the freeway, Randy's Donuts roadside sign, featured in movies such as "Iron Man 2," landed another cameo as a shuttle backdrop.

There were bumps in the road. Several hundred Inglewood residents suffered hours-long outages when power lines were temporarily snipped. Some businesses lost customers because of street and sidewalk closures.

For most of the way, Endeavour straddled wide boulevards ? Manchester, Crenshaw, Martin Luther King Jr. The one exception was when the shuttle poked through a slightly curved residential street lined with apartment buildings on both sides. It was such a squeeze that its 78-foot wingspan towered over driveways.

John Wilkes, 69, a longtime Inglewood resident, woke up five hours earlier than usual to stake out a spot.

"This is definitely a treat," said Wilkes, who is retired from the airline industry. "But what would be a better treat is to be able to take a ride on the shuttle."

As it wound through South Los Angeles, residents welcomed its presence. Before the move, some lamented over the loss of shade as trees were chopped down to provide clearance.

Others thought it was a decent trade.

"If you have to go through a little bit of pain to have something nice for the community, then it's worth it," said Pamela Tucker, who lives a block away from Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles.

When Endeavour rolls down King Boulevard, special attention will be paid to the pine trees planted in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

Endeavour may have circled the globe nearly 4,700 times, but its roots are grounded in California. Its main engines were fabricated in the San Fernando Valley. The heat tiles were invented in Silicon Valley. Its "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

It's no longer shiny and sleek like when it first rolled off the assembly line in the Mojave Desert in 1991 to replace the lost Challenger. As it cruised block-by-block, it's hard to miss what 123 million miles in space and two dozen re-entries can do to the exterior.

Shuffling Endeavour through city streets was a laborious undertaking ? nearly a year in the making. It could not be taken apart without damaging the delicate tiles. Airlifting it was out of the question. So was driving on freeways since it was too massive to fit through underpasses.

"This is unlike anything we've ever moved before," said Jim Hennessy, a spokesman for Sarens, the contract mover.

Such a move is not cheap. The cross-town transport was estimated at $10 million, to be paid for by the science center and private donations.

Endeavour's transport followed other shuttle moves. Earlier this year, Discovery taxied to the Smithsonian's annex hangar in Virginia. The prototype Enterprise was pulled by barge to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City.

Next month, Atlantis, which remained at its Cape Canaveral, Fla., home base, will be towed short distance to the Kennedy Space Center visitor's lobby.

New gene test flags risk of serious complications in sarcoidosis

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System have identified a genetic signature that distinguishes patients with complicated sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that can be fatal, from patients with a more benign form of the disease. The gene signature could become the basis for a simple blood test.

Their findings are reported online in the journal PLOS ONE.

In sarcoidosis, tiny clumps of abnormal tissue form in organs of the body. These clusters of immune cells, called granulomas, cause inflammation. Sarcoidosis can occur in the lymph nodes, liver, eyes, skin or other tissues, but almost always also in the lungs. The cause of the disease is unknown. African Americans are at higher risk for the disease and for more severe cases.

"One of the perplexing aspects of this disease is that two thirds of the people who get sarcoidosis get better with only minimal therapy," says Dr. Joe G.N. "Skip" Garcia, vice president for health affairs at the University of Illinois and principle investigator on the study.

But one third of patients go on to develop complicated sarcoidosis -- neurologic sarcoidosis, cardiac sarcoidosis and progressive lung disease, Garcia said. Complicated sarcoidosis can leave patients with lung damage, and in a small percentage of cases the disease can be fatal.

The challenge, Garcia says, is that there is no difference in the clinical presentation between patients with simple sarcoidosis and those who will go on to develop more serious disease.

The researchers took blood from patients with simple and complicated sarcoidosis as well as patients without the disease to look for a pattern of gene expression unique to complicated sarcoidosis.

They were able to identify a distinct 20-gene pattern of gene expression that could reliably identify those most likely to progress to complicated sarcoidosis.

A 31-gene expression signature had been identified previously, but a smaller panel of genes makes the new test less expensive and more useful clinically, said Garcia.

"We are dedicated to looking for new insights as well as new therapies for sarcoidosis and hope to someday be able to identify people at risk for it ahead of time," Garcia said.

UI Health has partnered with the Bernie Mac Foundation to form the Bernie Mac Star Clinic for Sarcoidosis, where the researchers hope to further validate use of the genetic signature.

They hope the genetic signature could someday be the basis for a biochip that could identify patients most likely to progress to life-threatening disease.

The study was supported by NIH grants NHLBI HL58094, RO1HL112051, HL68019, HL83870, UO1HL105371-01, RC2 HL101740-01 and NHLBI K23HL098454; and by the Johns Hopkins Sarcoidosis gene bank/database and the Hospital for the Consumptives of Maryland.

No. 6 K-State holds off Iowa State 27-21

AMES, Iowa (AP) ? Kansas State's offense is at its best when quarterback Collin Klein has the ball in his hands as much as possible.

The Wildcats defense doesn't mind it either.

Klein ran for 105 yards and three touchdowns and sixth-ranked Kansas State held off Iowa State 27-21 for its fifth straight win over the Cyclones.

Klein also threw for 187 yards for the Wildcats (6-0, 3-0 Big 12), who held the ball for over 40 minutes, converted on eight of 17 third downs and remained unbeaten heading into next week's showdown with West Virginia.

Kansas State held the Cyclones (4-2, 1-2) to just 231 yards of offense, in large part because Klein hardly ever let them touch the ball.

"It's an honor. It's a team game, though. It's about all 11 of us out there, it's about all 11 of us out there to execute, be calm in a high pressure situation," Klein said. "We were able to get some big, big first downs."

Iowa State still had a chance for the game-winning drive from its own 3-yard line with 2:17 left. But the Wildcats defense ? no doubt as fresh as it could be in such a late spot ? stopped the Cyclones on downs.

Jared Barnett threw for 166 yards and two TDs for Iowa State, which appears to be much better than many thought this season.

But like every team before them, the Cyclones had no answer for the methodical Klein.

"It was like he always does. He ran the ball well, the managed the ballgame well, threw the ball reasonably. His leadership was good," Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said.

Saturday's win was a vintage performance by Klein, who outgained the Cyclones by himself and showed why he's among the nation's best quarterbacks on the run.

One play in particular told the story of the day. Facing third-and-long deep in Iowa State territory, Klein hung in a collapsing pocket long enough for the right side of the field to open up. He bounced out of trouble and, with defenders going the other way, darted 12 yards to put Kansas State up 24-14 with 49 seconds left in the third quarter.

"Patience. He followed his blocks, and sometimes even when there wasn't a hole he just waited it out. You know, he's not a hard runner. He's a tough runner," Iowa State linebacker Jeremiah George said. "He's not going to bruise you around. He's just going to wait, wait, wait."

But to its credit, Iowa State simply wouldn't go away.

The Cyclones, helped immensely by a pass interference call on the Wildcats at the goal line, answered with a 2-yard TD run by Jeff Woody to get within 24-21 with 12:34 to go.

The problem was Iowa State's defense had already been on the field for 30 minutes by then, and the Wildcats wisely chose to wear the Cyclones out on the ground.

Though Kansas State had to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Anthony Cantele, they burned over eight minutes driving down the field.

Iowa State had two more chances. It was stuffed on fourth down both times.

"I think we played well defensively," Snyder said. "We had our moments, but we certainly had things we'd like to have back."

What had been torrential downpours eased by the late morning kickoff. Still, the game was played on a soggy field with heavy, swirling wind and two of the Big 12's best defenses squaring off.

None of that seemed to matter early on, since the Cyclones and Wildcats each found ways to put up points.

Iowa State jumped ahead 7-3 on Shontrelle Johnson's 2-yard TD grab to open the second quarter.

Klein answered, bullying his way through a pile of defenders for a critical fourth-down conversion at the Iowa State 3-yard line. Klein punched it in from 2 yards out to make it 10-7, Kansas State, with 8:18 left in the first half.

Barnett shook off a bad interception at the Kansas State goal line with a 30-yard TD pass to a wide-open Ernst Brun in the flat. But Klein's skills as a runner helped buy him enough room to toss a 45-yard completion to Tyler Lockett, and his 6-yard TD run put the Wildcats ahead 17-14 at halftime.

"He's getting the ball, so something good is going to happen. That's just our thought," Kansas State wide receiver Chris Harper said of Klein.

Iowa State played without its leading rusher, James White, who missed the game with a knee injury that Rhoads said after the game will likely keep him out for two weeks.

The Cyclones struggled without White, rushing for just 65 yards on 24 carries. But given how much clock Klein and the Wildcats ate up, it's not like White would gotten a lot of carries anyway.

"It reads like a Bill Snyder-authored novel. Standard Kansas State football game, coached by a legendary coach and quarterbacked by a great, great football player," Rhoads said.

Modified blood sugar test could lead to flood of gestational diabetes ...

Medical experts this month will debate whether to modify a blood sugar test used to detect diabetes in pregnant women, a controversial shift that would more than double the number diagnosed diabetic, at-risk and in need of intense, expensive prenatal care.

Diabetes already complicates about 7 percent of pregnancies. That would jump to about 18 percent with the modified test, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Advocates say the shift to the new test would mean better prenatal care to reduce complicated births that can harm mothers and babies and dramatically drive up medical problems and costs. Studies show diabetic mothers experience more complications in pregnancy, and their babies are more likely to be overweight, delivered early and by cesarean section, born with low blood sugar and high insulin and in need of intensive neonatal care.

Opponents to the modified test argue there is not sufficient scientific evidence to justify the higher costs at a time when the number of pregnant women with diabetes already is on the rise because of the nation's obesity epidemic and more older moms.

Everyone agrees the system isn't ready for the change.

The additional women could overwhelm high-risk pregnancy centers that provide specialized care for diabetic women, said Dr. Jorge Tolosa,? a specialist on the diabetic team at Oregon Health & Science University.

"We don't have the capacity to care for all those women at OHSU," he said. "No one in the country has the resources to do that."

It's true the change also would drive up health care costs, at least in the short run, as comprehensive prenatal care for diabetics is more expensive than conventional care.

"It involves a large team of experts including nutritionists, nurses and physicians to really provide this type of care, which has to be ongoing," Tolosa said.

Maria Elena Diaz,? 42, of Troutdale, received such care after OHSU doctors determined she had developed diabetes in pregnancy, called gestational diabetes, with her fourth child.

"I was really sad and afraid I was going to lose the baby," she said.

She was assigned a nutritionist and urged to exercise. She stopped eating bread, bought fresh food, stayed on a strict diet and lost weight. She checked her blood sugar four times a day, injected insulin morning and night, and saw her medical care team, which included Tolosa, once a week.

Still, she developed pre-eclampsia, a dangerous condition related to her diabetes that could have damaged her placenta, kidney, liver and brain. That spurred doctors to deliver her baby by cesarean section five weeks early on July 22. Her daughter, Mia Camargo Diaz, weighed 6 pounds. The infant spent a week in intensive care because of jaundice related to low blood sugar, an over compensation for her mother's high blood sugar.

Mia, now healthy, has gained four pounds since birth.

NEW STANDARD

Most doctors now use a two-step blood sugar test for gestational diabetes. If a patient tests high for blood sugar, she fasts overnight and comes back to the clinic for a second test.

But the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Group two years ago recommended a simpler test that is completed in a single visit. First, doctors measure blood sugar at fasting, then the patient drinks a sugar solution and is tested one hour later. After waiting another hour, doctors test the patient's blood sugar a third time.

The single-day test also has lower blood-sugar thresholds for triggering a diabetes diagnosis. So just as a university would admit more students by lowering its SAT scores, doctors will identify more women with gestational diabetes under the test's lower blood-sugar threshold.

At a National Institutes of Health conference in Bethesda, Md., on Oct. 29-31,experts will attempt to agree on the best diabetic screening method for pregnant women.

The American Diabetes Association and World Health Organization are among groups that support the change to the simpler test. But the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists a year ago concluded there isn't sufficient evidence without more studies to justify the higher costs.

Kaiser Permanente Northwest doctors are sticking with the two-step test until they see what conclusions emerge from the consensus conference, said Dr. Kimberly Vesco,? an obstetrician who does gestational diabetes research for Kaiser's Center for Health Research in North Portland. It's not clear that treating women with lower blood-sugar levels will "lead to improved pregnancy outcomes," she said.

?

DIABETES DANGERS

But across the country, some doctors and health organizations already have shifted to the new protocols. OHSU doctors switched in July.

"We kind of came down to the bottom line, if there is no harm in the treatment, it is the right thing to do," said Dr. Aaron B. Caughey,? director of the OHSU Center for Women's Health, who will speak at the NIH conference.

Since that shift, women diagnosed with gestational diabetes at the center doubled compared to the preceding three months, from 35 to 71 cases.

While initially more expensive, more aggressive treatment for newly identified diabetic women could prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as birth injuries, premature births, overweight babies and other dangers, reducing costs in the long run, said Caughey. He helped conduct one study that suggested as much.

The hospital is gearing up to care for more diabetic pregnant patients by relying on cell phone texting and telemedicine, which many health organizations are using, to interact with patients and reduce prenatal visits, Tolosa said.

A CONTINUUM

Pregnant women sometimes develop diabetes during pregnancy because the placenta produces hormones that make their insulin less effective in carrying sugar from blood to cells.

Diabetes occurs in pregnancy on a continuum, not as a discrete disease, writes Dr. Charles Lockwood, dean of the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University in Columbus.

Recent studies suggest blood sugar poses dangers to mothers and babies at levels below the current threshold for gestational diabetes. For such mothers, the rate of adverse birth results climbed with the level of their blood sugar, according to New England Journal of Medicine study of 23,316 pregnant women published May 8, 2008.

The findings suggest pregnant women with just slightly elevated blood sugar could benefit from the more intense prenatal care given now to diabetic moms.

Likewise, a study OHSU's Tolosa helped conduct showed diet changes, blood sugar monitoring and insulin therapy for pregnant women with mild gestational diabetes decreased birth weight and injuries, cesarean deliveries and pre-eclampsia.

Whether the diabetes test changes, health professionals are bracing for a diabetes epidemic fueled by obesity. More than a third of U.S. adults are obese, up from less than a fourth in the 1980s, and another third are overweight.

In turn, babies of obese women, particularly those who are diabetic, are more prone to chronic diseases and obesity, says Dr. Kent Thornburg,? research professor at OHSU.

"If a baby is born way too large because the mother is diabetic or too small because it is undernourished, the brain is rewired, the appetite increases and the baby is driven to eat more," he said. "We're looking at what some people in my field call the big train wreck."

'Vampire Diaries' premiere: Executive producer previews season 4

The 'Vampire Diaries' premiere raised a lot of questions about the future of protagonist Elena and her friends and love interests. Executive producer Julie Plec previews what's coming up on the show.

Looks like the supernatural baddies of Mystic Falls won?t have Elena to push around anymore? or at least, doing so won?t be so easy now that she?s a bloodsucker! With that shocker, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES took things to a whole new level. So what happens next? Let?s ask executive producer Julie Plec!

So has having Elena become a vamp been in the cards all along?
?JULIE PLEC: It was three years in the making, in that we knew when we started the series that we?d get there eventually. At one point, we thought we wouldn?t get there until Season 5, and then at one point contemplated getting there by the end of Season 2! We began Season 3 knowing how we were going to end it, so all the choices we made and everything that we did was all trying to very gently and quietly tee that up and put Elena in a situation where that was the biggest move that could happen in her life.

Is moving forward terrifying, given what a game changer this is?
?PLEC: It?s exciting, because it?s fresh, you know? It gets us jazzed every day, because we don?t feel like we?re just retreading the same old stuff. It?s daunting, because we think it?s awesome, but if nobody else likes it, there is nothing we can do. We have put the show on this course, and there?s no going back. So if it gets rejected, then we?re going to have to take a beat and think about what we?ve done. That said, I think people will like it, because it?s still Elena. It?s just Elena with a dozen, two dozen more layers to herself.

You?ve thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Nina Dobrev (Elena). How is she handling playing yet another version of the same character?
?PLEC: Nina is nothing if not a total champion, and she loves to be challenged as an actress. So far, so good! She?s finding all the nuances in the character that are different than Katherine and different than the human Elena. A lot of actors during Season 4 of a TV series don?t necessarily get to wake up and be somebody new, so I think she?s very excited about that.

So how does Elena being a vampire impact her relationships with the Salvatore brothers?
?PLEC: Ultimately, the pitch of the show back in the beginning was a love triangle between two vampire brothers and their love for the same girl, so it?s certainly something we?re not going to just lock up in a briefcase and put away. It?s always going to be there. What?s great about turning Elena into someone ?new? is that it takes where she was with Damon and Stefan and puts it in a blender and spins it around. We don?t really know what?s going to come out of that. Because this is a new person, we don?t know how she?ll connect with them and how they?ll react to the changes in her. It adds a lot of fun, new dynamics to this triangle.?

One of the highlights of last season was Joseph Morgan as Klaus. A lot of people were surprised he managed to survive. Is there a danger of falling in love with your villain and, by keeping him around, turning him into less of a threat?
?PLEC: With Joseph, certainly our intention was to kill him. And then we changed our minds because he?s so good, and we felt it was too soon to say good-bye to that character. So a lot of what you?re going to be seeing at the beginning of Season 4 is him at his most devilish and darkest. He is such a magnificent, nasty villain! The last thing we want to do is cut his legs out from under him, so we?re going to get to see some of nasty Klaus in action.

With Matt Davis? Alaric and Ganiel Gillies? Elijah gone, any plans to bring characters in to fill the void?
?PLEC: Well, the good news is that both of them have the ability to return to our show at any time in their contracts. They love us, and we love them so much. With Alaric being dead, of course, we won?t see much of him. But we?ve definitely got some new faces. Some of them are more mysterious, some of them are younger. There?s a new character named April who is a high school student that returns to town after a couple of years away and kind of lands right in the middle of everything. And then there?s a new vampire hunter named Connor who comes to town. He?s no Alaric. He?s a hardcore, humorless, take-no-prisoners, get-it-done character, and he?s a bit of a threat for our heroes. More so than they expected to come across!

Healthy Life Lessons: National U.S. Depression Screening Day

There is still a lot of stigma surrounding mental illness, and this stigma often prevents people from getting the help they need.

Recent research, however, has found that this stigma may be declining and Americans are now more knowledgeable than ever about the prevalence of depression and its treatability.

Today, October 11th, is?National Depression Screening Day.? More than 1,000 sites across the U.S. are offering free, anonymous assessments for various mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, and PTSD? To find a site, or to do the screening online, please visit: www.HelpYourselfHelpOthers.org.

Here is the official press release:

Mental Health Stigma Declining
Public Opinion Survey Reveals the Vast Majority Would Consult a Doctor if Experiencing Symptoms of Depression

National Depression Screening Day? Links Individuals to Treatment, Saves Lives

October 9, 2012 (Boston, MA) - Most Americans are familiar with depression and do not attach a stigma to seeking treatment for it from a therapist. In fact, most Americans believe that depression is treatable and go so far as to say it would not affect their vote in a presidential election if they heard that a candidate had consulted a therapist for depression.

The public opinion poll findings released this month by Screening for Mental Health, Inc., a nonprofit provider of mental health screening programs, come as thousands of community-based organizations, military installations and colleges prepare to host National Depression Screening Day events on Thursday, October 11. Screening locations and anonymous online screenings are available at www.HelpYourselfHelpOthers.org.

?These findings tell us that our efforts to reduce stigma and increase the public?s knowledge of depression through events like National Depression Screening Day are having an effect,? said Douglas G. Jacobs, M.D., associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and founder of Screening for Mental Health, Inc. ?The goal of the program is to educate people on the symptoms of depression, assess their risk for mood and anxiety disorders and connect those in need with local treatment services.?

The telephone poll conducted by Anderson Robbins Research surveyed 1,021 American adults between September 15 and 20 and sought to evaluate perceptions and knowledge of depression and mental health.

Other key findings include:

? Half (53%) of Americans personally know someone who has been treated for depression;

? Nearly three-quarters (72%) say they?d be likely to speak with a health care provider if they thought they were experiencing signs of depression;

? Two-thirds (67%) believe depression can be successfully treated most of the time;

? Two-thirds (65%) say learning a presidential candidate had sought treatment for depression would have no impact on their vote. There were no significant differences with regard to political party identification;

? Those who know people with depression are more likely than others to seek help themselves, (76%, compared to 66% of those who don?t know anyone with depression), and are more optimistic about the frequency with which depression can be successfully treated.

To continue to educate members of the public on the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide, and the correct course of action to take, National Depression Screening Day will take place on October 11. As part of this 22nd annual event, community organizations, colleges and military installations throughout the nation will offer free, anonymous mental health screenings. This event helps individuals learn the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide; educates friends and family members on what to do if a loved one is at risk; and gives individuals the opportunity to talk to a mental health professional about their own or a loved one?s situation.

Screening for Mental Health Inc. (SMH) is the non-profit organization that first introduced the concept of large-scale mental health screenings with its flagship program, National Depression Screening Day, in 1991. SMH programs include both in-person and online programs for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, alcohol problems, and suicide prevention. SMH programs have been used by hospitals, mental health centers, social service agencies, government agencies, older adult facilities, primary care clinicians, colleges, secondary schools, corporations and military installations reaching individuals ranging from adolescents to older adults.

Here is some additional information about depression in the United States:

1. How many Americans are estimated to suffer from depression?

Approximately 20.9 million American adults, or about 9.5 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year, have a mood disorder (the most common mood disorders are major depression and bipolar disorder). Major depressive disorder affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

2. What proportion of Americans with depression seek treatment? Studies have varied on this over the years but generally only about half of people seek treatment.

3. If stigma has declined, what factors usually function as barriers to individuals seeking treatment?

? People don?t know where to get help

? Cost of mental health care

? Not believing that mental health treatment will work

? Taking time off work for treatment

? Transportation issues

? Poor access (rural areas)

? Although stigma has declined it is definitely still an issue for some

4. What groups are particularly vulnerable to depression?

? persons 45-64 years of age

? women

? blacks, Hispanics, non-Hispanic persons of other races or multiple races

? persons with less than a high school education

? those previously married

? individuals unable to work or unemployed

? persons without health insurance coverage

5. Are there areas within the U.S. where it is more difficult to get treatment for depression?

Rural areas where there are fewer treatment facilities.

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says the attacks in Libya are so serious because they mean terrorists successfully attacked the U.S. on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Romney on Thursday criticized a remark from Obama spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter, who said that Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, are making the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi a political issue.

The attack killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Romney says, quote, "Mr. President, this is an issue because we were attacked successfully by terrorists on the anniversary of Sept. 11." His remark represents some of his strongest comments yet on the Libya attack.

Romney spoke during a rally in Asheville, N.C.

In response, the Obama campaign says Romney is trying to score "cheap political points."

(AP) ? Authorities searching for a 10-year-old Colorado girl said Wednesday they believe she was abducted, and they're confident her parents were not involved.

Jessica Ridgeway was last seen Friday after leaving home to meet friends at a park so they could walk to school together in the Denver suburb of Westminster.

Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso said at a news conference that police believe the girl was abducted by an unknown suspect. He said the focus of the case is not on her parents, who are cooperating.

"We're confident they are not involved in Jessica's disappearance," Materasso said.

Authorities are pursuing tips from five other states, including Maine, where a woman reported seeing a girl resembling Jessica Ridgeway on Sunday. That tip and others from Maryland, Texas, Nevada and Wyoming are among the hundreds of bits of information that have been passed on to Westminster investigators, Materasso said.

He didn't release details but earlier in the day said police were looking at whether there's a link between Jessica's disappearance and the Monday abduction of a girl in Cody, Wyo. ? about 500 miles away.

In that case, a man lured an 11-year-old girl into a sport utility vehicle saying he needed help finding his puppy. She was released about four hours later and found by hunters. Police there say they're looking for a white man between 55 and 60 years old with short, strawberry blond or white hair and a neatly trimmed mustache.

Two days after Jessica disappeared, her backpack was found on a sidewalk in a neighborhood about six miles north of her home. Police won't discuss what was found inside the bag or the results of testing done on it.

The same day the backpack was found, a woman reported seeing a girl who looked like Jessica in a blue Buick station wagon with Colorado license plates in Dexter, Maine ? 2,000 miles away.

Authorities don't know if it really was Jessica spotted in the town of 5,000 people, but they've issued a statewide alert for officers to stop a blue Buick station wagon with Colorado plates if they see one, Dexter police Sgt. Alan Grinnell said. So far, none have been stopped. The car's license plate number wasn't known.

Materasso said searchers were scouring Jessica's neighborhood and divers were searching ponds as a "precautionary measure" to see if they could be ruled out as having a connection to her disappearance. Police also have isolated landfill garbage collected around the time of the girl's disappearance but will search through it only if their investigation points them in that direction, he said.

Police have revealed little about their investigation and have instead tried to keep the focus on Jessica. They've asked the public to study her face in various photos they've released showing her with and without glasses. They're also encouraging people to keep tweeting about her in the hopes that will develop new leads.

Materasso told KOA-AM that investigators are checking out people identified by tips and there are no persons of interest yet.

"We know she's out there, and we want to bring her home," Materasso told the station.

Jessica's mother, Sarah Ridgeway of Westminster, and her father, Jeremiah Bryant of Independence, Mo., issued their first public call for help finding their daughter in a television interview Tuesday.

"I want her to come walking back through that door," Sarah Ridgeway said. "I need her to come walking back through that door."

Bikepacking the Colorado Trail: Days 1-3 | Singletracks Mountain ...

This is a continuation of Neil?s Colorado Trail bikepacking trip report. Get caught up with part I here.

Day 1

We got an early start at 6am, just as we would the rest of the trip, and caught a great sunrise. The first part of day one was pretty fun with a mainly flat, flowy yet sandy section. We continued through the Buffalo Creek burn area and proceeded onto some great trail on Segment 3 at Little Scraggy Trailhead.?We rode across Colorado 126 as the temperatures really started to rise. Segment 3 was so much fun we contemplated doing some Buffalo Creek side trails but we passed on the idea.

At this point we started talking about the bike detour around the Lost Creek Wilderness; the Guidebook suggests going 70 miles out of our way to Kenosha Pass but the CTR route bypasses through the town of Bailey and up US 285 to Kenosha. We decided to go to Bailey, as we wanted some snacks and didn?t want to waste our legs on 70 miles of forest roads. A strong but brief storm system came over us while biking Wellington Lake Road toward Bailey.

We made it to the Conoco off US 285 and I enjoyed some milk, beef Jerky, and Pringles. I kept thinking to myself before the trip how I would love to bypass via Bailey because of time, but at this point all I could see was 18-wheelers flying by on highway 285 with little to no shoulder for us to bike on (the first section from Bailey past Santa Maria camp had no shoulder at all.) I was just waiting to get hit from behind and fly over the guardrail. Mike was used to highway riding since he biked from New Hampshire to Oregon last summer on his road bike. I, on the other hand, was biking as fast as I could to each shoulder section. In the end we made it to Segment 6, Kenosha Pass, and continued to bike until we were exhausted. We camped not far from Jefferson Creek right before the Georgia Pass climb.

Tomorrow starts the real fun.

Day 2

We started with a nice steady climb up Georgia Pass with some fantastic views. The climb was easier than the descent as the rain from the previous day had soaked all the rocks. The second climb of the day was much steeper and brought us through a pine beetle infested forest. From the top we could see parts of Keystone resort and proceeded to a very fast and fun downhill. We saw a lot of other bikers, a welcoming sign, as we we approached Breckenridge. After a few more ups and downs and a wrong turn, we made it to Breckenridge.

We took the town recreation path up to Windy City Pizza, a cheap all-you-can-eat Italian buffet. We resupplied on food, snacks, and water and were quickly on our way again.

Once we got to the start of Segment 7, the Gold Hill Trailhead, it started to storm on us. Thunder, lightning, and pouring rain. Mike insisted we make a shelter out of his tarp, so we did. We took shelter for about an hour and the rain was really coming down during that time. The shelter kept us warm and dry but precious time was being wasted and I would later regret it.

We left the shelter at 4pm with the rain still coming down and the trail was turning into a creek. It was slow going and we had about 5 miles to the summit of the ridge. We finally got over the first saddle and were relieved; we thought we had made it. With the sun going down and clouds blinding our views, all we could do was stay on the trail. Unfortunately, we still had 2.5 miles to the actual summit of the ridge.

This was probably the scariest moment of the trip and it could have been totally avoided had we continued biking without taking shelter. When we finally made it to the summit, it was dark. The slow, wet decent in the dark with our headlights was a first for both of us. We were very cold and anxious to set up camp and eat. After 4 miles of descending we found a great campsite about a mile away from Copper Ski Resort. As I unpacked, I discovered that everything I needed to stay dry had gotten wet. Frustrating, but what a day it was!

Day 3

We woke up cold and all of our belongings were wet from the day before. Every night on the trail I slept with my sweaty and wet clothes in my sleeping bag as my body heat would usually dry them and keep them warm. But not this time?everything was just as wet as when I went to bed. To make it feel even colder, we were in the shade until we got to the gas station near I-70 in Copper where we basked in the sun, used the bathrooms, ate some food, and laid out all our wet stuff on the pavement to dry.

After a while we packed up and were on our way to Segment 8, which starts at Copper Mountain and goes under the ski lifts. The trail continued with a stout climb of 2,200 ft over 10 miles. This would be a very productive day but yet again, we needed to beat the rain over both Searle and Kokomo passes.

We ran into our first mechanical issue, which fortunately was pretty minor. Mike?s clip on his shoe kept popping out of the pedal so we turned his pedal tension all the way up but the clip would still pop out without effort. We determined it was the clip and there was nothing we could do until we got to a bike shop.

It was slow moving up to each of the passes. The trail was not very biker friendly and Mike and his pedal were not getting along. We made it to Searle Pass just in time for a nice thunderstorm. Once again, we biked as fast as we could to get over the ridge to Kokomo Pass; another scary moment, but not nearly as bad as Gold Hill. We stopped and took some pictures at Kokomo and started our long decent to Camp Hale. We did not notice Camp Hale until we passed it as it was hidden well. We went back to check out the barracks and took some photos. It was a very bizarre looking structure that held troops that were training with the 10th mountain division in the early 1940?s.

We continued on the trail until we hit highway 24. Here we would reach our second bike detour. The Holy Cross/Mount Massive Wilderness detour brought us up and over Tennessee Pass and into Leadville. It was 5:00pm when we got into town but we still wanted to get to the Elbert Trailhead to camp for the night. We stopped at Safeway for noodles, tuna, potato flakes, and snacks. We then headed to the bike shop where Mike bought a set of new Shimano clips, and on to a burger place for a large greasy burger, fries, and a milk shake!

We left Leadville around 7:00pm for Halfmoon Creek Road and ultimately the Mt. Elbert/Mt. Massive Trailhead. It was the Friday before Labor Day, and man was it a party! The campsites were packed full of people enjoying the holiday weekend. It felt so good to make it to the Mt. Elbert trailhead and the bike shop guy told us the next section is a lot of fun. We went to bed happy.

Check back for Day 4 and the continuation tomorrow?
