AP Exclusive: Myanmar verifying Muslim citizenship

SIN THET MAW, Myanmar (AP) ? Myanmar's government has launched a major operation aimed at verifying the citizenship of Muslims in western Rakhine state, the coastal territory that has been torn apart by Buddhist-Muslim violence since June.

Questions over whether the region's Muslim Rohingya population qualify for citizenship are at the heart of a crisis that has killed nearly 200 people and displaced 110,000 more.

A team of Associated Press journalists that traveled to the remote island village of Sin Thet Maw found immigration officers in the midst of a painstaking, census-like operation that took them house to house.

Rakhine state government spokesman Win Myaing says the operation began Nov. 8 in the township of Pauktaw, of which Sin Thet Maw is a part.

He says it will be carried out across all of Rakhine state.

Bizarre creatures found in Spanish cave

Three bizarre-looking springtails, tiny insectlike creatures, have been discovered in a Spanish cave.

Springtails are among the most ancient and widespread animals on the planet. Like insects, they have six legs, but are small, more primitive and lack wings. They usually have a furca, or a tail used to spring away from danger, hence the name "springtails." Many cannot be seen with the naked eye; the largest species is about 0.24 inches long (6 millimeters).

The three species ? dubbed Pygmarrhopalites maestrazgoensis, P. cantavetulae and Oncopodura fadriquei ? are very different from one another.

But each of the new species has the requisite springy tails and hairy, tiny bodies, resembling Lilliputian monsters. One of them, O. fadriquei, lacks eyes.

They were found by researchers from Spain's University of Navarra in the isolated Maestrazgo caves in the Teruel region of Spain, at elevations up to 6,560 feet (2,000 meters).

Outside the isolated caves, winter temperatures drop to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 degrees Celsius). Inside, however, temperatures stay between 41 and 54 F (5 to 11 C).

The scientists plan to study how these creatures adapt to the cold, wet and lightless conditions in the cave, according to a release from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology.

"Like other cave-adapted animals, the (springtails) require greater chemical sensitivity as they cannot use their sight in the absence of light," said University of Navarra researcher Enrique Baquero in the statement.

"Studying fauna in the caves allows us to expand on our knowledge of biodiversity," Baquero said.

"In the case of the three new species that we have found in Teruel, they are organisms that have survived totally isolated for thousands of years. Having 'relatives' on the surface means they act like relics from the past that have survived the climate change (that has) taken place on the outside of the caves."

Amy Davidson in?The New Yorker on Hillary Clinton?"Do Clintons ever truly go away?" Amy Davidson asks on the eve of Hillary Clinton's retirement from the State Department. Clinton insists that she won't make a 2016 presidential bid, but pundits gazing into crystal balls already see her as the Democratic frontrunner. Before speculating on where Clinton's going, Davidson takes a moment to review where she came from. "The true transformation in the past few years may have been not in Clinton?s character or approach but in the way she is now ensconced in a Washington establishment that she and her husband once challenged," she writes, arguing that perhaps Clinton should take her canonization as a cue to exit. "There is something enervating about the idea of sitting around for a couple of years wondering about what Hillary wants, and waiting for her next introduction. Can we ask if it might be time to say goodbye?"

Matthew Yglesias in Slate on the fiscal cliff?Everyone in Washington wants to heroically swoop in to save Americans from tumbling over the fiscal cliff. But when Matthew Yglesias looks at the looming Bush-era tax cut expirations, he doesn't see the same crisis as everyone else. He sees a game of chicken that's harming instead of helping the economy. "The problem is that the quest for the grand bargain is essentially a quest for the impossible," he argues. "Whereas ginning up crises to force Congress to strike that impossible bargain is wreaking real tangible harm on the country. Whatever happens during the lame-duck session, the best thing for America would be for the great and the good in Washington and corporate America to drop their fixation with the grand bargain."

Daniel Byman in?The New Republic?on Al Qaeda? In case anyone thought the war on terror was actually winnable, Daniel Byman would like to take this opportunity to remind us that Al Qaeda is not quite "on its heels," as President Obama recently put it. "In fact, reports of al Qaeda?s demise are both true and overstated," he writes. "For as the President and his advisors contend, the core organization now led by Ayman al Zawahiri is on its heels, with key senior leaders dead and many others on the run or in hiding. But as jihadist attacks in Benghazi, Yemen, and elsewhere indicate, the broader movement is alive and in some places prospering."

Bill George in?The New York Times?on Hewlett-Packard?One of the world's biggest computer companies, Hewlett-Packard, has been on a steady decline in recent years. And the troubles date back to 1999, long before Meg Whitman took over the role of chief executive, argues Bill George. He thinks that the only way to save it at this point is to separate the company's two main components, enterprise systems and computer hardware. "In its current form, Hewlett-Packard is a wasting asset, whose value to customers, employees and shareholders is steadily declining," George writes. "It is time for the board to move quickly to restore its former status as a company everyone can admire, one that can compete successfully in two very different global markets."

Shikha Dalmia in Bloomberg View on immigration? With some Republicans ready to talk about immigration reform, Shickha Dalmia argues that the U.S. can learn a thing or two from a nearby nation that also attracts scores of immigrants: Canada. Wait, Canada? Why not, Dalmia asks: "Canada?s provincial-nominee?program, while not perfect, avoids the economically meaningless distinctions between skilled and unskilled workers that bedevil the employment-based U.S. immigration laws.??It also puts in place incentives to treat foreign workers not as foes but as friends whose labor and skills are vital to the economy." In order to create an immigration system that works for newcomers and employers alike, she argues, the U.S. should follow Canada's lead on guest worker programs and devolving authority to regional governments.

Israeli official downplays Palestinian UN bid

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's deputy foreign minister downplayed the Palestinians' statehood bid at the United Nations on Thursday, calling their internationally backed quest for global recognition a "virtual move without any substance" that could boomerang against them.

After four years of deadlocked negotiations, the Palestinians plan to ask the U.N. General Assembly on Thursday to recognize a non-member state of Palestine in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

The measure, advanced over Israeli and U.S. objections, is expected to pass because the Palestinians have overwhelming support in the assembly and do not face a U.S. veto there as they do in the Security Council.

Backing for the Palestinians' appeal to the U.N. bid came from an unexpected quarter Thursday, when former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was quoted as saying the Palestinian request "is congruent with the basic concept" of the two-state solution.

"Therefore, I see no reason to oppose it," said, according to The Daily Beast news website. An Olmert spokesman did not return a call for comment.

Olmert, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and their teams conducted peace talks in 2007 through early 2009, but never clinched a deal.

The U.S. and Israel mounted an aggressive campaign to head off the General Assembly vote.

In a last-ditch move Wednesday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns made a personal appeal to Abbas, promising that President Barack Obama would re-engage as a mediator in 2013 if Abbas abandoned the statehood effort. The Palestinian leader refused, according to Abbas' aide Saeb Erekat.

For Abbas, the U.N. bid is crucial if he wants to maintain his leadership and relevance. The Islamic militant group's standing in the Arab world has risen as changes sweep the region, while Abbas' Fatah movement, which governs the West Bank, has been sidelined and marginalized.

Israel, meanwhile, focused on lining up European powers against the bid. But France and other European nations have lined up behind the Palestinians, Germany announced Thursday that it would abstain and Britain indicated it might do the same.

Still, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon insisted Thursday that "the Palestinians will come out the losers in the end."

The statehood bid, he told Army Radio, constitutes a "serious violation" of peace accords between the two sides. Israel will consequently feel itself "less bound" by those agreements, and could respond by withholding funds or security cooperation from the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, he said.

"In my opinion, it's a losing proposition," Ayalon said. "It's a virtual move without any substance."

The Israeli government argues that the Palestinians can only win a state through negotiations with Israel and maintains the U.N. appeal violates peace accords by sidestepping talks.

However, Ron Pundak, one of the architects of those mid-1990s accords, told Army Radio on Thursday that the agreements contained no provision blocking such a move.

The Palestinians are turning to the General Assembly a year after they failed to muster Security Council to recognize "Palestine" as a full-fledged U.N. member.

Intense Israeli and U.S. lobbying against that earlier bid buried it. But this year, the Palestinians have been helped by another year of stalemate and perhaps more important, changes in the Arab world that have strengthened the Palestinian Authority's militant Hamas rivals, who oppose negotiations with Israel.

European nations have been more receptive to this latest bid, in the hope of bolstering the authority's moderate president, Mahmoud Abbas, who governs the West Bank. Abbas champions negotiations, but his stature at home has suffered because of his failure to deliver a state through diplomacy during his eight-year tenure.

General Assembly recognition of an independent state of Palestine will not actually deliver a state, end the Israeli occupation or reunify the Palestinians, who are ruled by dueling governments in the West Bank and Gaza.

But the Palestinians hope U.N. recognition will add weight to their claims for an independent homeland and say they hope to leverage it to resume negotiations.

The Palestinians are going to the U.N. on an emotionally charged date. On Nov. 29, 1947, the U.N. decided to partition what was then British-ruled Palestine into Jewish and Arab territories. Jewish leaders accepted the plan, but Arabs rejected it, and the Palestinians were left without a state.

Bogus legal notice goes viral on Facebook | IP Spotlight

A fake ?copyright notice? ?has been making the rounds in Facebook posts this week. ?The notice attempts to restrict the use of the posting member?s ?profile information. ?It also encourages other Facebook users to post the notice to their profile. ?Quite simply, the notice is a hoax.

The copyright notice meme first made the rounds in Spring 2012, and it returned this month. ?Its return prompted Facebook to publish a ?fact check? bulletin debunking the hoax by stating: ?There is a rumor circulating that Facebook is making a change related to ownership of users? information or the content they post to the site. ?This is false.?

It should come as no surprise that the notice has no legal effect. ?The use of Facebook is subject to Facebook?s terms of service. ?A mere post can create no legal obligation. ?The notice does not create or modify any contract between the posting member and any other user or Facebook itself.

One version of the bogus legal disclaimer is:

In response to the new Facebook guidelines, I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, graphics, comics, paintings, photos, and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention). For any and all commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times!

(Anyone reading this can copy this text and paste it on their Facebook Wall. ?This will place them under protection of copyright laws. ?By the present communiqu?, I notify Facebook that it is strictly forbidden to disclose, copy, distribute, disseminate, or take any other action against me on the basis of this profile and/or its contents. The aforementioned prohibited actions also apply to employees, students, agents and/or any staff under Facebook?s direction or control. ?The content of this profile is private and confidential information. ?The violation of my privacy is punished by law (UCC 1 1-308-308 1-103 and the Rome Statute).

Facebook is now an open capital entity. All members are recommended to publish a notice like this, or if you prefer, you may copy and paste this version. ?If you do not publish a statement at least once, you will be tacitly allowing the use of elements such as your photos as well as the information contained in your profile status updates.

Readers who are familiar with intellectual property law will quickly spot the post?s meaningless references to nonexistent laws the ?Berner Convention? and ?UCC 11-308-308?. ?Whether the person who created the original post intended errors like this to serve as a signal, or whether it was merely a lack of knowledge, many Facebook users have fallen for the ruse.

Possible trigger for multiple sclerosis nerve damage

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? High-resolution real-time images show in mice how nerves may be damaged during the earliest stages of multiple sclerosis. The results suggest that the critical step happens when fibrinogen, a blood-clotting protein, leaks into the central nervous system and activates immune cells called microglia.

"We have shown that fibrinogen is the trigger," said Katerina Akassoglou, Ph.D., an associate investigator at the Gladstone Institute for Neurological Disease and professor of neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, and senior author of the paper published online in Nature Communications.

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is thought to be an autoimmune disease in which cells that normally protect the body against infections attack nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, often leading to problems with vision, muscle strength, balance and coordination, thinking and memory. Typically during MS, the immune cells destroy myelin, a protective sheath surrounding

nerves, and eventually leading to nerve damage. The immune attack also causes leaks in the blood-brain barrier, which normally separates the brain from potentially harmful substances in the blood.

"Dr. Akassoglou has focused on the role of the blood-brain barrier leak in MS and has discovered that leakage of the blood clotting protein fibrinogen can trigger brain inflammation," said Ursula Utz, Ph.D., M.B.A., a program director at NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

Microglia are cells traditionally thought to control immunity in the nervous system. Previous studies suggested that leakage of fibrinogen activates microglia. In this study, Dr. Akassoglou and her colleagues used a cutting-edge imaging technique called two-photon laser scanning microscopy to watch what happens in an animal model of MS.

"Our results provide the first evidence linking leakage of fibrinogen to neuronal damage," said Dr. Akassoglou, "Vascular changes are the instigator of neurotoxicity."

Using a mouse model of MS, the researchers found that leakage of fibrinogen and microglial activation occurred days before nerve damage began, suggesting they occur in an early, pre-clinical stage of the disease.

During this period, microglia changed shapes and clustered around blood vessels along with other immune cells. Further experiments suggested that fibrinogen activated microglia by binding to a receptor, called CD11b/CD18, which caused the microglia to release reactive oxygen molecules that, in turn, damaged neurons. Inhibiting the binding of fibrinogen to the receptor prevented microglial activation and nerve damage.

Current treatments for MS are designed to suppress autoimmunity. The results from this study suggest that targeting the interaction between fibrinogen and microglia may be an effective alternative. In the mice, blocking fibrinogen's blood clotting activity prevented microglial activation and nerve damage.

"Current drugs target primarily downstream events. This interaction could be an upstream target that suppresses immunity and neurodegeneration," said Dr. Akassoglou.

In 2006, Dr. Akassoglou received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, which honors and supports the finest and most promising researchers early in their careers.

This study was supported by NINDS (NS051470, NS052189, NS066361); the National Cancer Institute (CA082103); the National Center for Research Resources (RR004050), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (HL096126), the American Heart Association, the Bechtel Foundation, the Dana Program in Brain and Immuno-imaging, the H. (AP) ? Bomb threats to 30 courthouses and other government buildings across Tennessee forced many to be evacuated Tuesday, including the federal building in Memphis, but authorities said no explosives were found.

Tennessee became the fourth state to deal with similar bomb hoaxes. One targeted 28 courthouses in Oregon and similar threats were reported in Nebraska and Washington this month.

Nine threats were reported in West Tennessee counties ? including the Memphis federal building ? seven in Middle Tennessee and 14 in East Tennessee, said Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security spokeswoman Dalya Qualls.

No arrests have been made in Tennessee and authorities had searched about 14 courthouses by Tuesday afternoon.

Jeremy Heidt, a spokesman for the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, said the threats were made by telephone to court clerk offices. "It's been going on all morning," said Heidt.

The threats to courthouses in Ashland City and Clinton were made by men.

"It was just a man's voice saying simply if this is the Cheatham County Courthouse you're about to be blown up, and it startled me. So I just said I'm sorry. I tried to get him to repeat himself and that's when it just cut off and I thought 'Oh my,'" Cheatham County deputy clerk Rebecca Nicholson told WTVF-TV.

Anderson County Clerk Jeff Cole told The Knoxville News Sentinel that a man's voice simply said "There's a bomb in the building" and hung up.

The FBI is working closely with state authorities and will pursue federal charges if necessary, said Joel Siscovic, the bureau's spokesman in Memphis.

The federal building in Memphis houses the federal court and offices for the Department of Justice, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen. It was cleared around 9 a.m. for a couple of hours while authorities checked it.

Police temporarily blocked a trolley line that ran by the federal building in Memphis and brought in a dog to search the building before letting people return around 11 a.m.

According to Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph, a woman called police around 8:30 a.m. and said she had information that someone was going to blow up the county criminal justice center, the federal building and a main U.S. Post Office in the city.

All three locations were searched and nothing was found, she said.

I've discovered the little 4" crank mills from PSI... they're cute, easy to make and pretty good sellers... these are 5 that I finished this week for the holiday markets. They're all 4" tall and finished with wipe on polyurethane.

No water rights negotiations with iwi - PM - Stuff

TRACY WATKINS AND VERNON SMALL John Key

Fairfax NZ

JOHN KEY: "The basic principle here is the Crown believes it's right."

Prime Minister John Key has ruled out direct negotiation with iwi over water rights as a High Court challenge over the Government's asset sales enters its second day.

He has also warned that losing the case would force the Government to borrow more money as there is none left in the coffers for capital spending on new projects like schools and hospitals.

"We have no capital budget allocated in our accounts; so in other words we are working on the principle that when we buy other assets on behalf of New Zealanders we'll be using funds we get out of the Mixed Ownership Model process," Key said.

"If we can't sell those 49 per cent stakes, in principle we are going to have to make a decision about whether we are going to go ahead and buy other assets. There are some assets we just need to purchase so arguably New Zealand would go into debt.

"At a time when the world is going through an economic crisis, where debt is fundamentally bad....I can't see why New Zealanders would want us to add more debt than we absolutely have to to the New Zealand balance sheet."

The Maori Council wants the sale of shares in Mighty River Power put on hold till water rights are resolved. Mighty River Power is the first State owned power company which the Government plans to sell a minority stake.

The Maori Council challenge has already delayed the share float till next year.

But Key said he did not believe there would be further delays, even if the challenge went to the Supreme Court as expected.

And he ruled out a settlement to make the challenge go away.

"The basic principle here is the Crown believes it's right. The Crown does not believe that the selling of shares in any way impinges on a Government's right to register rights and interests if they believe those rights and interests are genuine.

"I can't see any particular reason why we would want to back away from our current position."

On the first day of the hearing yesterday, the Maori Council case appeared to turn on whether ministers are simply implementing the will of Parliament by declaring Mighty River Power is no longer a state-owned enterprise.

Justice Ronald Young identified the Crown's ''king hit'' submission was that ministers would be carrying out Parliament's intent by transferring the state assets to the mixed ownership model in line with an amendment to the State Owned Enterprises Act.

That would mean the court could not review the decision, because Parliament is sovereign. However, the lawyer for the Waikato River and Dams Claim Trust, Helen Cull QC, argued the court could review the decision, which would be implemented by an order-in-council.

She said the Government had breached Section 9 of the SOE Act by acting in a way that was inconsistent with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. Before the company was transferred its water rights and other generation assets should be ''tagged or marked'' or some other mechanism used to preserve Maori interests.

Justice Young said he did not understand why the Government needed to act before the transfer because water rights were determined under the Resource Management Act and the Government could change that any time in favour of Maori. ''I don't follow why it matters who owns Mighty River Power.''

Try front squats. They'll strengthen the abs, and will reenforce proper posture during squatting in general. On a front squat, it's impossible for you to go too far forward really, as if you go too far forward, you'll just drop the bar. Also, if the weight gets unsafe you can ditch a front squat easier.

Also, you should probably be deadlifting to strengthen the lower back musculature. You can also do hyperextensions and good mornings, too, but deadlifts and squats sorta feed eachother.

So do front squats for a couple weeks, then go back to back squats, and you'll find you'll be able to back squat a lot better. Also, front squats directly improve your ability to clean, too.
