The Liberal Democratic Party, led by hawk Shinzo Abe, will return to power after three years in opposition following its victory in Sunday's general election, but its triumph appears unlikely to stabilize Japan's political situation.
Abe, set to become the second person to serve twice as premier in postwar Japan after Shigeru Yoshida, could face difficulties in securing passage of legislation in the divided Diet, where the LDP still lacks a majority in the House of Councillors, analysts said.
Although he is expected to be chosen as the next prime minister by the powerful 480-seat House of Representatives later this month, Abe "may not be able to do what he wants unless the LDP wins the upper house election in the summer," political commentator Norio Toyoshima said.
