Winn-Dixie has donated a 50-foot refrigerated semi-trailer containing about 13,000 pounds of food to Second Harvest Food Bank, a regional food bank based on Jacksonville.
The donation will fill two critical needs at the nonprofit, according to a news release.
The semi-trailer will replace an existing one that is no longer road-worthy and is being used as an auxiliary refrigeration unit to store perishable food items. The food will help restock the Second Harvest's Jessie Street warehouse, which has been nearly emptied of nonperishable food inventory because of increased demand and a decrease in food and monetary donations.
The colorfully wrapped semi-trailer was unloaded Monday using a Winn-Dixie donated forklift and pallet jacks, according to the release.
The donated food will be put into immediate use through Second Harvest?s Mobile Pantry Program and its BackPack Program.
Demands on the food bank have nearly quadrupled in the past four years and monetary and food donations are urgently needed. Every $1 donated provides seven meals to people who otherwise might go without, according to the release.
In 2008, Second Harvest distributed 7.6 million pounds of food in 17 North Florida counties and this year hopes to distribute 24 million pounds of food, the equivalent of 20 million meals.
