Orleans Community Health faces 1-day strike by union

MEDINA - After negotiations broke off Monday, the union representing 325 employees of Orleans Community Health announced Tuesday they will hold a one-day strike July 13 - unless a deal is made at a bargaining session Friday.

Local 1199, Service Employees International Union, United Healthcare Workers East, has been trying to win a new contract in 28 meetings since December. Its members intend to strike Medina Memorial Hospital and the other Orleans County health facilities owned by Orleans Community Health.

A federal mediator has been presiding over the talks and ordered the sides back together Friday.

A statement drafted by the employee negotiating committee said, "The nurses and other employees are fed up with the lack of progress toward a settlement. We need to pay competitive wages to maintain quality care in Medina.

"Management's cuts to our health benefits were a particular setback to recruitment and retention of staff. We are trying to reach a reasonable compromise, but management will not meet us halfway. We feel that we have no other option but to exercise our right to engage in a work stoppage."

Hospital CEO James E. Sinner could not be reached to comment Tuesday.
